Violence Erupts at Tripura Protest Against Waqf Act Amendment, 18 Police Personnel Injured
A tense protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act turned violent in Unakoti district, Tripura, leaving 18 police personnel, including Sub-divisional Police Officer Jayanta Karmakar, injured. The incident occurred on Saturday when around 4,000 protesters, led by the Joint Movement Committee and Congress’s Unakoti district president Md Badruzzaman, rallied in the Kubjar area to demand the rollback of the contentious Act.
According to Kailashahar police station officer-in-charge Sukanta Sen Chowdhury, tensions escalated when a scuffle broke out between protesters and security forces. As the situation spiralled out of control, agitators began pelting stones and bottles at law enforcement personnel, resulting in the injury of at least 18 officers, including the SDPO. To disperse the crowd, police resorted to lathi charges and fired tear gas shells. An FIR has been filed, and investigations are ongoing.
Md Badruzzaman, the organizer of the protest, insisted that the rally was intended to be peaceful, but a group of individuals with vested interests incited violence to tarnish their movement’s image. Despite this, the protesters will continue to demand the rollback of the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
