Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu Urges Development of Smaller Hydropower Projects to Boost State’s Energy Generation Capacity
In a bid to augment Arunachal Pradesh’s energy generation capacity, Chief Minister Pema Khandu has called on power developers to explore smaller hydropower projects in the state. Speaking at the eighth steering committee meeting of the Hydropower Development Department in Tawang, Khandu highlighted the vast untapped potential of the state’s tributaries, which can generate between 100 and 300 megawatts of power. This approach would not only help to meet the state’s increasing energy demands but also provide a much-needed economic boost to the local communities.
According to the Chief Minister, Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), focused on large-scale projects, can diversify by developing smaller, feasible projects by utilizing the existing men and machinery deployed at the sites. With the state grappling to meet its energy needs, Khandu emphasized the importance of acting swiftly, stating that each day’s delay in execution incurs a significant loss of ₹9 crore in revenue.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress on 13 hydropower projects across the state, emphasizing the need to move forward with these projects without further delays. This call-to-action comes as Arunachal Pradesh continues to struggle with meeting its energy demands, often relying on power imports from neighboring states. By focusing on smaller hydropower projects, the state aims to increase its energy independence and secure a stable power supply for its residents.
