Bollywood Slams Detractor: Karan Johar and Akshay Kumar Respond to Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Insensitivity
Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar Condemn General Dyer’s Comments on Jallianwala Bagh Massacre
In a scathing response to General Reginald Dyer’s recent remarks calling the victims of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre "looters," Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar and producer Karan Johar have spoken out against the comments. Kumar plays the role of C Sankaran Nair in the film "Kesari 2," which re-examines the tragic event that claimed the lives of over 1,650 people in 1919.
"It’s outrageous that General Dyer’s granddaughter could make such a statement," Karan Johar said in a statement. "She says history is history, but that’s not a reason to excuse or justify the genocide that took place. The fact that she showed such disdain for the biggest genocide in our nation’s history only adds to my demand for an apology." Johar added that the film "Kesari 2" is a true story of C Shankaran Nair, who fought against the British Empire’s brutality.
Karan Johar reiterated that the film is an outstanding story that deserves to be told. "We have watched the tragedy of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, and felt the pain and anger, but what makes us angrier is that there has never been an official apology from the British government, the monarchy, or the crown. This film demands just that – an apology," Johar emphasized. The director-producer also mentioned that "Raazi" and "The Ghazi Attack" were other true stories that resonated with audiences, and that "Kesari 2" has the same potential.
Akshay Kumar, who plays Sankaran Nair in "Kesari 2," added his voice to the debate. "One nation’s trauma is another nation’s lesson," he said. "Dyer’s granddaughter failed to understand that and kept repeating that ‘history is history.’ I appreciate Karan’s words on this matter," Kumar said. The actor-producer duo lambasted the General’s granddaughter for her lack of empathy and understanding of the magnitude of the tragedy.
In a previous interview, General Dyer’s granddaughter spoke to a family member of a victim, saying her grandfather was an honorable man, widely liked by Indians, who could speak several Indian languages. When asked if her grandfather was a looter, she replied, "I think history is history, and you’ve got to accept that." The remarks sparked outrage, and Karan Johar and Akshay Kumar’s response is the latest in the ongoing controversy over Dyer’s comments.
"Kesari 2" releases in theatres on April 18th, and has already sparked heated debates on social media and in public discourse. The film is said to be an outstanding story of C Shankaran Nair, based on the book "The Case That Shook The Empire."
