Nepal Police Arrests Durga Prasai, Alleged Mastermind Behind Violent Pro-Monarchy Protests
The Nepal Police has finally apprehended Durga Prasai, the alleged leader of the violent pro-monarchy protests that erupted in Kathmandu on March 28. Prasai, a businessman with ties to the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), was taken into custody near the eastern border of Kakarbhitta, where he had reportedly surrendered to Indian authorities before being handed over to the Nepalese police. His bodyguard, Deepak Khadka, was also arrested in the same operation.
According to Nepal Police Central Spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General Dinesh Kumar Acharya, Prasai and Khadka have been arrested on charges of committing crimes against the state and organized crime. The violence on March 28 resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left hundreds injured, with estimated damages worth over 460 million Nepalese rupees.
The pro-monarchy protests, led by the Nawaraj Subedi-led joint movement committee, were supported by the RPP, which is advocating for the reinstatement of the monarchy. The party’s chair, Rajendra Lingden, has been vocal about the need for change, calling for the release of party leaders and cadres in police custody.
Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has vowed to take action against those responsible for the violence, warning that even former King Gyanendra Shah would not be spared if found guilty. The statement came as tensions remained high in the capital city, with the RPP staging a protest at Balkhu on Tuesday, demanding the reinstatement of the monarchy.
The police have made several arrests in connection with the violent protests, including RPP Vice Chairman Rabindra Mishra and General Secretary Dhawal Shamsher Rana. The Kathmandu District Court has extended their remand for an additional 15 days as part of an ongoing investigation into their alleged involvement in the violence.
As the situation in Nepal continues to unfold, the government remains on high alert, with security personnel deployed to maintain order. The arrest of Durga Prasai is seen as a significant development in the investigation, and it is expected that more arrests may follow in the coming days.
