Education in North East India: Bodo Students Union Calls for Urgent Reforms

The recent Gunotsav 2025 evaluation results have shed light on the dismal performance of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) districts, which include Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, and Udalguri, in Assam. In response, the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) organized a crucial discussion at the Jwhwlao Nileswar Brahma Auditorium, Bodoland University, bringing together over 300 educators from Bodo medium schools across the region.

At the event, top officials, including Bodo Sahitya Sabha President Dr. Surath Narzary and Bodoland University Registrar Dr. Subung Basumatary, joined ABSU President Dipen Boro to discuss the pressing issues and problems plaguing Bodo medium institutions. The BTR-6 districts, alongside Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, ranked amongst the lowest in the state, prompting concerns about the state of education in the Sixth Schedule areas.

Boro highlighted chronic teacher shortages in lower primary (LP) and upper primary (UP) schools, as well as the lack of subject-specific teachers in Mathematics and Science. The absence of key administrative officials, including Inspectors of Schools (IS) and Block Education Extension Officers (BEEOs) in districts like Udalguri, Baksa, and Kokrajhar over the years, was also cited as a crucial factor behind the poor results. "Immediate and concrete steps are necessary to address the systemic failures and improve the overall educational infrastructure in the Sixth Schedule regions," Boro urged, emphasizing the need for policy action and collaborative efforts to uplift the standard of education in tribal and remote areas of Assam.

As the Gunotsav 2024-25 results reveal a concerning trend, the ABSU President stressed that the government must implement Clause 6.3 of the BTR Accord, which pertains to educational reforms in tribal areas. The Clause aims to establish a framework for improving the education system, particularly in regions with limited resources and inadequate infrastructure. By calling for policy action and collaborative efforts, the ABSU is pushing for a solution that prioritizes the education of students in these underserved regions.

The event prompted a collective appeal from participants for a collective response to address the state of education in the BTR-6 districts. As Assam continues to grapple with the consequences of the Gunotsav 2025 results, stakeholders from the education sector and government officials must work together to address the systemic issues hindering progress and provide quality education to the Bodo students.
