North East India Aims to Unite as Single Tourism Destination

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma embarked on a significant step towards bolstering the region’s tourism sector by chairing the inaugural meeting of the High-Level Task Force on Tourism for North East India on April 7. His vision was to position the region as a seamless destination for both domestic and international travelers, unifying the North East states in a concerted effort.

Sangma emphasized that visitors from across India and globally perceive the North East as one entity, making it imperative for the states to collaborate closely to facilitate tourism. The task force, formed by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, aims to craft a comprehensive roadmap to boost tourism in the region. This involves identifying tourism circuits in all eight states, proposing strategic interventions, and adapting successful international models to suit the region’s unique needs.

Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia lent his support to the initiative, suggesting that North East India could emulate the success of countries like Thailand and Vietnam, which have successfully harnessed their natural and cultural assets for sustainable tourism growth. “The region can leverage its rich heritage and natural beauty to drive sustainable development, boost local economies, and generate employment,” he said.

The task force’s recommendations are expected to shape future investments and strategies to position North East India as a leading tourism destination in the country. The initiative has been in the works since the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council held in Agartala in November. Sangma hailed it as a “landmark” moment for the region’s tourism sector, pointing out that North East states are already laying the groundwork through progressive industrial policies.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha updated the meeting on the initiatives underway in his state to promote local cuisine and culture, while Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang emphasized the need for consistent branding and marketing across states. Both leaders stressed the importance of stronger inter-state collaboration to improve visibility and accessibility. With the task force’s report due to shape the region’s tourism landscape, North East India is poised to become a more cohesive and attractive destination for travelers.
