Initially, Ukraine had proposed an unconditional 30-day ceasefire to halt all fighting. Russia, however, rejected this proposal, instead suggesting a limited truce focusing on the Black Sea and energy infrastructure, which Ukraine accepted last week. Since then, both nations have accused each other of sabotaging their respective energy systems. Moscow’s demand for the lifting of economic sanctions as a precondition for a maritime truce has effectively stalled progress.
The ongoing negotiations have tested the patience of the Trump administration. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized on Friday that Russia’s opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to peace is waning. Rubio stated, “Their actions — not their words, their actions — will determine whether they’re serious or not, and we intend to find that out sooner rather than later.”
