Premier’s Shock Visit to IGM Hospital: Public Hospitals Can Learn from Private Sector Success Stories

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha Conducts Surprise Visit to Agartala’s IGM Hospital

In a move aimed at addressing the challenges faced by government-run hospitals, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha paid a surprise visit to the Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital in Agartala on Saturday. As the state’s health minister and a renowned maxillofacial surgeon, Saha’s visit was intended to gauge the hospital’s condition and identify areas that require improvement.

Saha, who has been scrutinizing the state’s healthcare system, emphasized the need for government-run hospitals to learn from their private counterparts. “There is a huge load here, and the doctors and healthcare personnel are doing a great job under such pressure,” Saha said. “However, there is a scope of improvement in terms of cleanliness… We have a lot to learn from the corporate sector in terms of hospital management.” Notably, Saha pointed out that government-run hospitals spend 10 times more than what is spent in corporate hospitals, highlighting the potential for cost-cutting measures.

The chief minister acknowledged that the IGM Hospital, despite its challenges, has made significant progress in recent years. “They (IGM Hospital) can be given 80 per cent marks, but if we improve the rest of the shortcomings, they can get 100 per cent,” he stated. Saha emphasized that despite problems being inherent in any system, it is essential to work towards resolving them. He declared that he will soon sit down to address the shortcomings he has identified during his visit.

During his visit, Saha also stopped by the Tripura Dental College, which is housed in the same complex as the IGM Hospital. IGM Hospital, formerly known as the Victoria Memorial (VM) Hospital, was renamed in 2004 to honor former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during its centenary year.

Saha’s visit is a testament to the state government’s commitment to improving the healthcare system in Tripura. With his medical background and experience as a minister, he is well-positioned to drive positive change in the sector.
