Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Relents, Scraps Newly Introduced Parking Regulation for Jhalukpara Road

Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) has abruptly scrapped its newly introduced parking regulation for Jhalukpara Road, just hours after its implementation. The short-lived directive aimed to reduce traffic congestion in the town’s busiest commercial area by introducing an alternate-side parking system.

According to the original order, vehicle owners and local businesses were instructed to park on designated sides of Jhalukpara Road, with vehicles parked on one side from the 1st to 15th of each month, and on the opposite side from the 16th to 30th. However, after receiving immediate feedback and conducting a more thorough assessment of ground realities, the DMC recognized that this solution was not appropriate for their specific situation.

The sudden implementation created confusion among shopkeepers and customers, with some businesses expressing concerns about the potential impact on their daily operations. “We initially believed this alternating system would help manage the chronic congestion on Jhalukpara Road while providing adequate parking for shoppers and business owners,” said DMC Mayor Saikat Patra. “However, after listening to our concerns and conducting a thorough assessment, we recognized that this solution wasn’t suitable for our unique situation.”

Experts agree that each locality has unique characteristics that must be carefully considered when implementing parking regulations. “Implementing such changes requires proper coordination with all stakeholders,” said Pradeep Sharma, who runs a textile store on Jhalukpara Road. “While alternate-side parking has been successful in other urban centers, it’s essential to understand the specific needs and challenges of each area.”

The DMC is now exploring alternative solutions to address the traffic congestion and parking issues on Jhalukpara Road. In the meantime, the city’s residents and business owners will continue to face challenges navigating the narrow lanes and bustling commercial activity. The decision to scrap the parking regulation serves as a reminder of the importance of effective communication and collaboration between local authorities and stakeholders.
