A Run for Survival: Arunachal’s Bosing-Bogong Leaders Venture into Kaziranga for a Conservation Quest
In a groundbreaking initiative, 30 Gaon Burahs (GBs) from villages in Arunachal Pradesh embarked on an exposure-cum-awareness tour to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Assam. The nine-day tour, flagged off by MLA Tapi Darang, is aimed at familiarizing the village heads with the importance of wildlife conservation and eco-tourism.
During the tour, the GBs will engage in safaris, interact with local communities involved in preserving nature, and learn about conservation practices. MLA Darang emphasized the need for the GBs to take a proactive role in safeguarding the environment and wildlife, highlighting the importance of the Air Gun Surrender campaign. He urged the GBs to prevent rampant hunting and protect local flora and fauna, stressing that this exposure tour will bring positive change in the years to come.
The initiative has been praised by local leaders and conservation experts. Gagam Ering, NPP Block President, lauded the effort to sensitise rural leaders on eco-tourism and conservation themes for the benefit of future generations. Kenpi Ete, DFO of the D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary, commended MLA Darang’s efforts, stating that Kaziranga’s community-led conservation model could serve as an inspiration for similar efforts back home. Ete stressed the importance of local involvement in preserving biodiversity.
District Tourism Officer Leena Perme highlighted the benefits of linking tourism with wildlife conservation in Kaziranga, which has boosted local economies through homestays and other ventures. Perme encouraged the GBs to replicate this model in their own areas. The tour is led by Gandhi Darang, a nature guide, journalist, and conservation enthusiast, who will accompany the team throughout the nine-day period.
As part of the tour, the team will participate in a plantation drive at Kaziranga, further promoting the message of environmental stewardship. The initiative is sponsored by MLA Tapi Darang, reflecting a growing commitment to blending traditional leadership with modern conservation practices in Arunachal Pradesh. The tour aims to educate the GBs on the importance of protecting wildlife and the environment, and empower them to play a proactive role in safeguarding the region’s biodiversity.
