PM Modi Meets Bangladesh Leader, Boosts Regional Ties Amid Border Tensions and Humanitarian Concerns

Modi Meets Bangladesh Interim Government Chief, Conveys Concerns on Minority Safety

On the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Bangladesh’s interim government Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, sparking hopes of reviving bilateral relations strained since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year. The discussion focused on the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus, and the need for Dhaka to avoid rhetoric that fuels tensions.

Modi conveyed India’s concerns to Yunus, urging the Bangladeshi government to ensure the security of its minority communities. This comes weeks after Yunus’ comments on the Northeast drew sharp responses from Indian leaders. The Indian Prime Minister also pressed for a thorough investigation into alleged cases of atrocities targeting minority groups in Bangladesh.

The meeting was seen as a significant step towards improving ties between the two nations, with India emphasizing its support for a democratic, stable, and peaceful Bangladesh. Prime Minister Modi underlined India’s commitment to a people-centric approach, highlighting the cooperation between the two countries that has delivered tangible benefits to their citizens. India has been critical of recent incidents of violence targeting Hindu minorities in Bangladesh and had granted asylum to Sheikh Hasina.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s statement following the meeting said, "The Prime Minister reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh… He underlined that any rhetoric that vitiates the environment is best avoided." Misri also emphasized the need for strict law enforcement and prevention of illegal border crossings to maintain border stability and security.

The meeting between Modi and Yunus has raised expectations that the two countries can work towards a more positive and constructive relationship. However, the road ahead remains challenging, particularly in the face of lingering tensions and differences over the alleged instances of violence targeting minority communities. As the situation unfold, it remains to be seen how effectively the two nations can navigate their complex relationships and work towards a stronger and more enduring partnership.
