Imphal Set to Establish Delimitation Committee Amid Ongoing Controversy

The Manipur BJP has announced plans to establish a 13-member committee to review the ongoing delimitation exercise in the state. The move comes as a response to the controversy surrounding the exercise, which is based on a 20-year-old census report.

According to senior BJP MLA Kh Ibomcha, the party has no objections to delimitation as long as it is based on an authentic census. However, the party is demanding a review of the 2001 Census, which is riddled with irregularities, before proceeding with the exercise. Ibomcha emphasized that the party cannot support the proposed delimitation exercise if it is based on an outdated and inaccurate census.

During a recent meeting of BJP MLAs, it was decided to form the 13-member delimitation committee, which will consist of 12 MLAs and one office bearer from the party’s state unit. The committee will work towards addressing the issue and ensuring that the delimitation process is fair and accurate.

The demand for a review of the 2001 census is not new in Manipur. On March 24, 13 other parties also urged the Centre to defer the delimitation exercise in the state until the “errors” in the headcount that year are rectified. The Supreme Court has granted the Centre three months to carry out the delimitation exercise in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur, but the situation in Manipur has been deemed not conducive for the exercise due to ongoing violence.

The controversy surrounding the delimitation exercise has sparked concerns about the impact it may have on the state’s electoral process. The BJP’s decision to establish a 13-member committee is a significant move, as it may help to address the concerns and ensure that the exercise is carried out fairly. The committee’s findings will be crucial in determining the fate of the delimitation exercise in Manipur.
