India Under President’s Rule: Manipur Imposes Emergency, Opposition Slams Centre’s ‘Undemocratic’ Move
India Imposes President’s Rule in Manipur Amid Ongoing Violence and Efforts to Restore Peace
In a bid to bring stability to the restive northeastern state of Manipur, the Lok Sabha approved a statutory resolution confirming the imposition of President’s rule in the region. The unanimous decision came after a short debate, with lawmakers from various parties expressing concern over the situation and demanding swift action to restore peace.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah attributed the violence in Manipur to an order by the state’s high court, which sparked ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023. Notably, Shah stated that there has been no violence in the state in the last four months, suggesting that efforts to broker a peaceful solution are underway. Talks are reportedly ongoing with both communities to find a lasting solution to the conflict.
The home minister also highlighted the historical context of the violence, citing clashes between the Naga and Kuki communities in the 1990s that claimed over 750 lives. Shah emphasized that the current conflict is not solely the result of the BJP’s tenure, as there were similar outbreaks during previous governments.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, speaking during the debate, emphasized the need for peace and stability in Manipur, urging the government to end insurgency and promote dialogue between warring factions. Other lawmakers, including K Kanimozhi of the DMK and Supriya Sule of the NCP, voiced concerns over the situation and called for swift action to restore normalcy.
The resolution, passed by a voice vote, seeks to address the Proclamation issued by the President on February 13, 2025, under Article 356(1) of the Constitution. The move aims to bring back peace and order to the violence-torn state, with the central government committing to take all necessary steps to restore normalcy.
As the situation in Manipur continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the imposition of President’s rule will ultimately lead to stability and peace.
