India’s Lok Sabha has confirmed President’s rule in Manipur, with members crossing party lines supporting the decision despite criticizing the central government’s handling of the situation. The move comes as the Northeastern state continues to grapple with violence and unrest.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the House, claiming that the government has taken all necessary steps to restore normalcy in Manipur. He noted that there has been no violence in the state in the past four months and talks are ongoing with both Meitei and Kuki communities to find a peaceful resolution. However, Shah acknowledged that the situation remains unsatisfactory as long as people are forced to live in camps.
Shah also shed light on the root cause of the violence, tracing it back to an order by the state’s high court. He revealed that central forces were deployed immediately upon the order, and that 80% of the 260 people who have died in the violence occurred within the first month. The home minister also drew parallels with the ethnic clashes between Naga and Kuki communities in the 1990s, which lasted for a decade and claimed the lives of 750 people.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor supported the resolution, calling for the restoration of peace and stability in the state, as well as promoting dialogue and inclusivity. TMC’s Sayani Ghosh also backed the decision, urging for early restoration of peace, while DMK’s K Kanimozhi emphasized the need to end divisive politics in Manipur. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant expressed concern over the situation, advocating for peace to be restored, and NCP (SCP) member Supriya Sule criticized President’s rule, calling for strong intervention from the home minister.
The resolution, ‘Consideration on the Proclamation issued by the President on the 13th February 2025 under article 356 (1) of the Constitution in relation to the State of Manipur’, was adopted by the House via a voice vote. The violence began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized against the high court order, and despite efforts by the central government to bring warring communities to the negotiating table, the situation remains unstable.
