Ceasefire at Stake: Kuki-Zo Leaders Set Key Preconditions for Peace in Turbulent Manipur
As tensions between the Kuki-Zo and Meetei communities in Manipur, India, continue to escalate, a recent consultation meeting organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has revealed three non-negotiable preconditions for the cessation of hostilities. The meeting, which brought together Kuki-Zo leaders across Kangpokpi district, aimed to find a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict.
The three preconditions set by the Kuki-Zo leaders are no movement of Meetei individuals in Kuki-Zo-dominated areas and vice versa, initiation of meaningful and structured dialogue during the cessation of hostility, and a six-month ceasefire to be observed on fulfillment of the aforementioned conditions. The meeting, which was attended by the Kuki-Zo Council, the apex political platform representing the Kuki-Zo people, indicates a willingness to engage in negotiations.
The move comes amid efforts by the central government to restore peace in the state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s initiative to allow the free movement of Meiteis along national highways in Manipur, announced on March 8, has, however, failed to translate into reality. The Federation of Haomee (FH), a civil society organization, has even demanded Shah’s resignation on moral grounds, claiming he has failed to deliver on his promises.
The government’s new approach to restoring peace in the state is now focused on facilitating negotiations between the warring groups, scheduled to take place on April 5 in Delhi. The meeting is seen as a crucial step in shaping the trajectory of inter-community relations in the region. With the stakes so high, it remains to be seen whether the Kuki-Zo and Meetei communities can put aside their differences and work towards a peaceful resolution.
As the nation waits with bated breath for the outcome of the April 5 meeting, one thing is clear: the road to peace is a long and arduous one. Only time will tell if the parties can come together to find a lasting solution to the conflict that has plagued Manipur for so long.
