Rapid Rise of Global Muslim Population: India and Beyond, A New Era of Diversity Unfolds
As the global population continues to grow, a significant change is expected in the number of Muslims worldwide. By 2030, more than one million Muslims are projected to reside in 79 countries, up from the current 72 countries. This surge is driven by several key factors, including high fertility rates, immigration, and improvements in healthcare leading to reduced infant mortality.
The Asia-Pacific region is expected to witness the most dramatic increase, with 60 percent of the world’s Muslims projected to reside here. Countries like Indonesia, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh are expected to experience significant population growth, with Pakistan potentially surpassing Indonesia to become the largest Muslim-majority country. The region’s high fertility rates, particularly among the young population, are accelerating population growth, while improvements in healthcare and economic conditions are contributing to a decline in infant mortality rates.
In Europe and America, Muslim population growth will also continue, although they will remain minorities. The share of the Muslim population in Europe is expected to rise from 6 percent in 2010 to 8 percent by 2030, with notable increases in Western and Northern Europe. In the United Kingdom, the Muslim population is projected to reach 8.2% of the total population by 2030, up from 4.6% in 2010. In France and Austria, the Muslim population is expected to reach 10.3% and 9.3%, respectively. In America, the Muslim population is projected to more than double, from 2.6 million in 2010 to 6.2 million by 2030, driven by immigration and high fertility rates.
In sub-Saharan Africa, the Muslim population is also expected to increase, with the number of Muslims in Nigeria potentially surpassing that in Egypt by 2030. The share of the Muslim population in this region is expected to grow rapidly, outpacing growth rates in other countries.
As the world’s Muslim population continues to grow, it’s essential to understand the factors driving this change and the implications for global communities. With accurate projections, we can better prepare for the future and work towards creating a more inclusive and harmonious world for all.
