Raging Conflict: Ex-Manipur CM and Meghalaya CM Slammed in War of Words
Guwahati: A War of Words Escalates in the Northeast
A bitter feud has erupted between top political leaders in the Northeast region, with former Chief Minister of Manipur, N Biren, accusing Meghalaya’s Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, of meddling in the internal affairs of Manipur. The heated exchange has left many wondering if the region is on the brink of a political impasse.
According to N Biren, the late P A Sangma once advocated for the regionalization of the Northeast, threatening the unity of the nation. Now, Biren alleges Sangma is attempting to destabilize Manipur by interfering in the state’s internal affairs. He also criticized Sangma for not understanding the complexities of the crisis, which stem from a mix of challenges, including the drug menace, illegal immigration, and the pursuit of power by select groups.
Biren recounted the significant progress made by Manipur, including the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), which he believes has brought about real change. He emphasized that the recent violence was not spontaneous, but rather instigated by those who felt threatened and insecure. Sangma, he added, should be aware that Manipur had initiated border fencing and strictly regulated the Free Movement Regime (FMR).
The former Chief Minister also highlighted the state’s efforts to address issues that affect the region. Manipur is home to 32 indigenous tribes, and their identities, cultures, and ways of life deserve protection, he emphasized. “Refrain from encouraging illegal immigrants or interfering in matters that threaten this delicate balance,” Biren urged. “The people of Manipur have endured enough. Let us live in peace.”
In response, Sangma expressed concern over the dragging of his late father’s name into the controversy. He appealed for everyone to work together to restore peace and harmony in Manipur, rather than engaging in political posturing. According to Sangma, his father had always fought for the people of the Northeast and was a strong advocate for their rights.
As tensions escalate in the region, one can’t help but wonder if this battle of wits will ultimately lead to a more united or divided North East. The fate of Manipur and the Northeast hangs in the balance, and only time will tell what the future holds for this volatile and complex region.
