Agartala Municipal Corporation Embarks on Drainage Construction Project to Combat Flooding

The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) is determined to address the perennial issue of urban flooding in the city, particularly during the monsoon seasons. A significant drainage construction project is underway, leveraging Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) for scientifically constructed drainage systems, coupled with the incorporation of footpaths above.

According to Commissioner Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, the initiative is being executed under Agartala Smart City Limited, with a long-term goal of ensuring proper water flow. The project is currently underway on a 23-kilometer stretch within the city, with the commissioner inspecting the on-going construction work along the stretch from Lal Bahadur Chowmuhani to Ashram Chowmuhani area. This region has historically been prone to severe flooding due to drainage deficiencies.

“We have prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to address the issue of drainage deficiencies in this region, which has historically experienced waterlogging during heavy rains,” Dr. Yadav said. “We have also encountered some encroachment issues along the way, but after discussions, the concerned individuals have extended their cooperation.” The commissioner emphasized that the project’s objective is to construct a well-planned drainage system that ensures effective water flow.

The drainage construction work has commenced on both sides of the road, with a plan to implement similar projects across the entire city. According to the commissioner, the overall project is expected to be completed within the next two years, but the AMC has prioritized finishing work in flood-prone areas before the onset of the next monsoon season.

Dr. Yadav expressed confidence in the project’s success, saying, “Our aim is to make Agartala a flood-free city, and we are committed to delivering this goal by the specified time.” The project’s success will be a significant step towards resolving the city’s long-standing issue of waterlogging and flooding.
