Assam Reaffirms Commitment to Resolve Long-Pending Border Dispute with Neighboring Meghalaya
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Commitment to Resolving Boundary Dispute with Meghalaya
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reiterated his government’s commitment to resolving the long-standing boundary dispute with Meghalaya. Speaking to journalists after a police academy event near Shillong, CM Sarma emphasized the need to resolve the issue in a sensitive and gradual manner, respecting the sentiments of residents from both states.
The boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya has a chequered history, with the two sides having settled six of the 12 contested sectors in 2022, under the auspices of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. However, the remaining six sectors remain unresolved, with CM Sarma hinting that progress can be made in three of these areas at any point in time.
Meghalaya, however, appears to be seeking a comprehensive resolution to the boundary dispute, with CM Sarma cautioning against setting a rigid timeline. The Survey of India is actively involved in the demarcation process, with the 2022 agreement remaining binding on both governments. Assam’s dedication to working with neighboring states to resolve boundary disputes is unwavering, with CM Sarma suggesting that central government oversight may be necessary for effective resolution.
Assam’s experience with border disputes with multiple states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland, has resulted in over 150 fatalities since the 1960s. The Chief Minister’s commitment to resolving the boundary dispute with Meghalaya is a welcome step, but the road to resolution will be long and arduous. It remains to be seen whether the central government will lend its support to facilitate a lasting resolution to this contentious issue.
In the end, the success of the boundary dispute resolution depends on the willingness of both states to work together and respect each other’s sentiments. CM Sarma’s promise to resolve the issue in three of the remaining six sectors at any point in time is a positive step, but it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to placate Meghalaya’s concerns and pave the way for a lasting resolution.
