Two massive back-to-back earthquakes shook Myanmar on Friday, leaving a trail of destruction and panic across multiple countries, including Thailand, India, China, and Bangladesh. The tremors were felt as far as Kolkata, Imphal, East Garo hills, and Dhaka, with reports of widespread damage and loss of life.
According to the latest updates, the death toll in Myanmar has risen to at least 39, with over 50 injuries reported. In Thailand, the Cabinet has declared a state of emergency in the affected regions, while Myanmar’s military-led government has formally requested international aid to assist in the ongoing rescue and relief operations. The advises of at least 20 deaths in Mandalay, primarily due to the collapse of a mosque, which crumbled following the twin earthquakes. The historic Mandalay University suffered heavy damage, prompting fears of further casualties.
The earthquake’s impact extended beyond Myanmar and Thailand, however. China’s Yunnan province, as well as parts of India, including Kolkata and Imphal, felt the shock, with reports of injuries and structural damage. Bangladesh was also significantly affected, with reports of tremors felt in Dhaka and Chattogram. In Thailand, a 30-storey under-construction high-rise collapsed in Bangkok, killing at least three workers and leaving 81 people missing.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the situation and assured India’s readiness to offer assistance. “Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. Our authorities are on standby,” he tweeted. Myanmar, located near the Sagaing Fault, a major tectonic boundary, is prone to earthquakes. The country has experienced at least six quakes of 7.0 magnitude or higher since 1930.
Rescue operations are ongoing in both Myanmar and Thailand, with authorities bracing for potential aftershocks. The Myanmar military chief, Min Aung Hlaing, has ordered emergency medical and rescue operations across the affected areas. The international community has responded with offers of aid, as the full extent of the devastation becomes clearer.
As the situation evolves, Myanmar’s military-led government is working closely with local authorities and international partners to respond to the disaster.
