Exciting Transformation: Tihar Jail Relocation, Enhanced Security with More CCTVs, and Empowering Pink PCRs

In response to the critical overcrowding issue at Tihar Jail, Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday plans to relocate the renowned correctional facility to a more expansive site outside the city. Currently situated near Tilak Nagar and spanning 400 acres, Tihar Jail houses approximately 19,500 inmates, nearly double its intended capacity of 10,026, with the population continually increasing. The government has earmarked ₹10 crore for consultation and survey activities related to this strategic relocation initiative.

The proposed new jail complex will be developed at various potential sites, aiming to alleviate the severe congestion within the current facility and improve conditions for inmates and staff alike. Further emphasizing the importance of infrastructure development, the government has scheduled renovations for the Lampur Restriction and Detention Centre beginning April 1, supported by an allocation of ₹20 crore.

Chief Minister Gupta also unveiled additional measures aimed at enhancing public safety, particularly for women. As part of this initiative, 50,000 new CCTV cameras will be installed across Delhi, supplementing the existing 280,000-strong network. Gupta underscored the commitment to “boost women’s safety and security” through meticulous identification and reduction of poorly-lit areas known as ‘dark spots,’ thereby curbing potential threats.

Strengthening the focus on women’s security, the Chief Minister introduced Pink Police Control Room units and announced plans for specialized women’s battalions to encourage greater recruitment of female police officers. To further support women, two new hostels will be constructed under the ‘Sakhi Niwas Yojana,’ providing safe accommodations for working women and female students engaged in higher education pursuits.

In addressing concerns about the equitable distribution of welfare benefits, Gupta assured that her government would launch a rigorous verification campaign. The aim is to ensure that the welfare schemes benefit only eligible Delhiites, pointedly excluding illegal immigrants, notably Bangladeshis and Rohingya, from accessing these resources.

To address the challenges faced by the Fire Department, particularly in congested areas, the government has opted to introduce two-wheeler first-response vehicles. Additionally, small fire engines will be strategically stationed at 100 different locations within cramped and hard-to-reach areas. This initiative reflects a significant budgetary allocation of ₹110 crore dedicated to modernizing equipment, such as pressure pumps and vehicles equipped with live camera technology.

Finally, Gupta proposed the establishment of an emergency operations center to enhance crisis management capabilities across the city. This comprehensive suite of initiatives underscores a clear commitment to improving infrastructure, ensuring public safety, and prioritizing the welfare of all Delhi residents. The government’s proactive approach is geared towards addressing critical issues while anticipating future challenges, reflecting a robust plan for the capital’s advancement.
