Strengthening the Northeast Fortress: A Call for Holistic Security Solutions
As security concerns continue to plague the Northeast region of India, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) K T Parnaik called for a multifaceted approach to address the issue. Speaking at a seminar on Northeast India’s military history at the Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), Parnaik emphasized the importance of winning public trust, minimizing civilian casualties, and upholding human rights.
According to Parnaik, years of neglect have led to insurgency in the region, and it’s crucial to adopt strategies that prioritize the welfare of the people. He cited the need for a comprehensive approach, mirroring his words are likely to resonate with those who have been affected by the conflict. The Governor’s words serve as a sobering reminder that the Northeast’s security conundrum requires a multifaceted solution, encompassing military strategies, economic development, and social cohesion.
The seminar, organized by RGU’s history department, delved into the evolution of the Northeast, with a specific focus on the post-independence era. The event featured a keynote address by former North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) professor Imdad Hussain, as well as presentations by faculty members from RGU’s history department. He commended the vice-chancellor, Prof S K Nayak, and his team for organizing the seminar, which provided an opportunity for researchers to share their findings and gain a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding the Northeast’s military history. As the chief rector of the central varsity, Parnaik emphasized the importance of research in military history, noting that fresh perspectives from young scholars could yield valuable insights into national security and integration.
As the Northeast continues to grapple with security concerns, Parnaik’s message serves as a poignant reminder that addressing this issue requires a thoughtful, people-centric approach.
