Riverfront Families Faced with Desperate Reality: 19 Evictions Looming, Alternative Housing Urgently Needed
Agartala Residents Fear Eviction as Riverfront Development Project Pushes Them to the Edge
Agartala, India – In a tense standoff, 19 families in the Jaipur area, who have been living on Khas land for 30 to 40 years, are fighting against eviction to make way for a sprawling Riverfront Development Project. The ambitious project, aimed at transforming the banks of the Howrah River into a hub of amenities, has served as a bitter pill for these families, who are struggling to find alternative accommodation.
The families, who have been served eviction notices by the Sadar Sub-Divisional Administration, are not willing to vacate the area without a guarantee of alternative housing. “This is our only shelter, and we don’t have the resources to buy land elsewhere,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. The residents, mostly daily wage laborers, are finding it hard to relocate due to financial constraints.
On Monday, the families visited the Sadar Sub-Divisional Office to appeal to the authorities to reconsider their decision. “We are willing to vacate if the administration provides us with alternative rehabilitation arrangements,” they said. However, with no such provisions in place, the families have vowed to resist eviction, even if it means putting their lives at risk.
The project, which is being implemented at a rapid pace, promises to bring a range of amenities, including a gym, an amusement park, and dedicated spaces for morning walks. While the development is expected to revitalize the area, the plight of the 19 families has raised concerns about the impact on low-income households. As the deadline for their eviction, March 27, approaches, the residents are determined to fight for their rights and demand a more humane solution.
The Administration, however, has maintained that the project is necessary to develop the area and create job opportunities for the local population. While the riverfront development is expected to bring benefits to the community, the human cost of the project is already evident in the lives of these 19 families, who are on the verge of being displace. As the standoff continues, the residents are hoping that the authorities will reconsider their decision and provide alternative housing arrangements to ensure they are not left in limbo.
