Kunal Kamra, the provocative comedian, had ignited the fuse, his sizzling satire targeting none other than Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. His performance, a parody of the 1997 song ‘Bholi Si Surat,’ sparked a firestorm, as he hurled a scathing jibe, calling the revered leader a “gaddar” – a traitor. Oh, the words still simmering, still seething, and still causing sparks!
As the tempest raged on, the venue, innocent bystander and reluctant poster child, felt the full force of the right-wing’s wrath. Cameras, lights, and speakers were vandalized, a spectacle eerily reminiscent of the dark days of censorship, when artistic expression was muzzled. The very fabric of creative freedom was torn asunder.
The feud, now a slow-cooked curry, has seen multiple FIRs registered against the comedian, with the Mumbai police joining the fray, filing an FIR against Kamra over his alleged defamatory remarks. And, in a gesture of solidarity, a case was registered against around 40 Shiv Sena workers, those instigators of chaos, allegedly responsible for the destruction.
As the city stumbles through the mayhem, Sainik leader Aaditya Thackeray, Eknath’s son, pontificated, “Only an insecure coward would be rattled by a song.” Ah, but which way the wind blows, my friend? The same Eknath Shinde, the one with the golden throat, now pandering to the might of the crowd, urging anarchy, and demanding the law to take its course. Hypocrisy, darling, thy name is politics.
The dust may have just begun to settle, but this is far from over. The lights, although dimmed, will burn on, casting an unforgiving glare on the sepia-toned streets of Mumbai, where art and politics conspire, where the sacred cows are milked to produce a frothy brew, and where the free speech, once a sacred tenet, now hangs precariously in the balance.
