Assam Rivers in Turmoil: Congress, AIUDF Unite Against BJP MLA’s Alleged Scourge of Violence in the Assembly
Assam Legislative Assembly Seeks to Settle Scores: Protest Erupts Over BJP MLA’s Alleged Assault
Tensions ran high in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday, March 24, as opposition lawmakers from the Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) took to the streets to protest against alleged attacks by BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi. The protest came a day after Kurmi allegedly attempted to assault opposition members and used abusive language during a heated debate on Friday.
Led by Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, the frustrated lawmakers gathered inside the assembly premises, demanding swift action against Kurmi and criticising Speaker Biswajit Daimary for failing to intervene adequately in the mayhem. "This protest is a response to the unprecedented incident on Friday, when Kurmi allegedly rushed to assault opposition MLAs," Saikia said. "We demand action against him, and it’s unacceptable that the Speaker allowed the situation to escalate."
As the protest unfolded, AIUDF lawmakers donned black shirts as a mark of solidarity, while some AIUDF members attempted to bring bamboo structures into the assembly to symbolize self-defense against alleged aggression from BJP MLAs. However, security personnel intervened, preventing them from entering the premises. AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam clarified the purpose behind the unusual move: "We’re concerned about the BJP MLAs, who move from their seats to assault opposition members, and the Speaker doesn’t provide us with protection. That’s why we created these bamboo barriers – to protect ourselves from any attacks."
The frenzied atmosphere soon led to a 10-minute adjournment of the House by Speaker Daimary, in a bid to restore order. The BJP’s Sushanta Borgohain, however, dismissed the opposition’s protest as an unnecessary disruption, stating, "This is not a place for protests meant to grab attention. Bringing objects like bamboo structures into the House is unacceptable. These actions only harm their own reputation."
The volatile situation underscores the ongoing power struggle between the ruling party and the opposition in Assam, with emotions running high and maneuvering for maximum political advantage. As the standoff continues, it remains to be seen how the Speaker and government will respond to the crisis, and if the simmering tensions will lead to a more prolonged and intense conflict in the hallowed halls of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
