VICTORY FOR THE VOICED: Tripura’s Kokborok Script Concerns Settled as Student Body Reverses Protest Stand After CM Saha’s Assurance
Twipra Students Federation Calls Off Protest After Reflective Meeting with Tripura Chief Minister
The Twipra Students Federation (TSF), an indigenous students’ organization in Tripura, has withdrawn its protest on national highways after a meeting with Chief Minister Manik Saha. The federation had been blockading highways since March 21 to demand the adoption of the Roman script for the Kokborok language. Following their meeting, the TSF has agreed to put the protest on hold, pending further discussions with the Chief Minister.
The TSF General Secretary, Hamalu Jamatia, stated that their demands were genuine and that the CM had acknowledged the difficulties faced by students and the people. “We had a detailed discussion with the Chief Minister, and he understood our concerns. He assured us that he would work towards resolving the issue and asked us to wait as he would be discussing it with higher authorities,” Jamatia said.
The TSF had been protesting on national highways, including in Agartala, to push for the switch to the Roman script. They claim that the current Bengali script is not adequate for the Kokborok language and has led to misunderstandings and miscommunication. The move comes after the TSF earlier announced that it would continue its protest on Monday, with a readiness to engage in discussions with the Chief Minister.
In a significant development, Chief Minister Manik Saha has assured the TSF that he would work towards resolving the issue and has asked for patience while he discusses the matter with higher authorities. The move is seen as a positive step towards finding a solution to the long-standing issue. With the protest call-off, the TSF has temporarily suspended its highway blockade, giving some much-needed relief to commuters and businesses in the region.
The TSF’s action has attracted national attention, with many supporting their cause and others calling for a more inclusive and practical solution to the language issue. As the dust settles, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold, with the TSF identifying the Chief Minister’s commitment to a resolution as a key step forward.
