CNCI’s Urgent Plea for Official Recognition: Championing the Chakma Language’s Future
Mizoram’s Chakma Community Demand Official Recognition of Their Language
The Chakma National Council of India (CNCI) has reiterated its demand for the official recognition of the Chakma language in Mizoram. The organization made this demand during its two-day general conference held in Lawngtlai district, where delegates expressed deep concern over the continued exclusion of the Chakma language from the state’s list of officially recognized languages.
The council also condemned the persistent misidentification of the Chakma community as Bengalis in the annual reports submitted by the Commissioner for Linguistic Minorities to the President of India. Despite comprising nearly one-tenth of Mizoram’s population, the Chakma community has been overlooked in the language recognition process.
"We have resolved to actively pursue official recognition of the Chakma language by the Mizoram government and will take definitive steps towards realizing this goal," said a statement issued by the CNCI. The organization plans to take a proactive stance in ensuring the recognition of their language, which is an essential part of their cultural identity.
In addition to the language recognition issue, the conference also addressed the ongoing nationwide protests calling for the repeal of the Bodhgaya Temple Act, 1949. The council urged the central government to address the grievances of the Buddhist community regarding the management of the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya. The conference unanimously decided to extend full support to the national movement advocating for Buddhist control over the temple’s administration.
The demand for the official recognition of the Chakma language is a long-standing issue in Mizoram, and the CNCI’s renewed efforts to push for this cause are likely to provoke a strong response from the government and other stakeholders. As the organization continues to campaign for this goal, it remains to be seen whether they will succeed in their efforts to have their language recognized and valued as an integral part of Mizoram’s cultural heritage.
