Assam’s Historic Decision: PRC for Moran Community in Arunachal Sparks Mixed Reactions
Assam Government to Provide Permanent Residence Certificates to Moran Community in Arunachal Pradesh
The Assam government has taken a significant step to address the long-standing issue faced by the Moran community residing in Arunachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that his government will provide permanent residence certificates (PRCs) to the Moran community in Arunachal Pradesh. According to Sarma, the move is aimed at empowering the community and enabling them to access facilities in Assam, including government jobs.
The decision has sparked a mixed reaction from the people of Arunachal Pradesh. While the Moran community has welcomed the move, the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) is reviewing the situation and has planned to meet with Chief Minister Pema Khandu to discuss the issue. The All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU) Arunachal unit has also appreciated the decision, but emphasized that a permanent solution would be achieved only when the Arunachal government issues PRC to the community.
The Moran community, living in districts like Namsai, has been demanding PRC for several years. In February, they boycotted the Statehood Day celebration and even blocked the national highway at the Dirak gate, resulting in the police detaining five individuals. In November last year, AMSU’s Arunachal unit, along with the public, enforced a 12-hour bandh demanding PRC.
According to AMSU’s Arunachal unit adviser, Manoj Kumar Moran, the community “wholeheartedly welcomes” the Assam government’s decision. However, he stressed that the community wants a permanent solution, which can only be achieved by obtaining PRC from the Arunachal government. The adviser also noted that the community plans to continue seeking PRC in the coming days.
The AAPSU, on the other hand, is currently studying the legality of the move. According to AAPSU president Dozi Tana Tara, if the Moran community avails of PRC from Assam, they may have to forgo facilities provided by the Arunachal government. The union plans to meet with Chief Minister Pema Khandu to discuss the issue further.
The development has put the spotlight on the long-standing issue of PRC for the Moran community in Arunachal Pradesh. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Arunachal government responds to the Assam government’s decision and what lies ahead for the Moran community.
