MANIPUR POLITICS: Jiribam MLA Rejects Allegation of Supplying Weapons to Miscreants
A day after the Jiri Apunba Lup (JAL) accused a Meitei MLA of supplying weapons to miscreants, the legislator has strongly denied the allegations, labelling it as “unfortunate”. Md Achab Uddin, the MLA from Jiribam, refuted the charges, stating that he has been working tirelessly for the welfare of people from all walks of life, regardless of religion or ethnicity.
The MLA said he has filed a complaint with the Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur Police in connection with the allegations. He expressed his disappointment and claimed that JAL’s statement was based on false information, which does not bear a signature. JAL’s statement alleged that the MLA had organized meetings supporting miscreants with financial help, weapons, and accessories.
In a fresh statement, JAL clarified that their earlier statement was not related to their executive bodies and appealed to all stakeholders and the public to maintain peace and harmony in Jiribam district. The Meitei organization’s statement came amidst turmoil in the state, which has seen over 250 people killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. The Centre had imposed President’s rule in the state after N Biren Singh resigned as chief minister, and the state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation.
The allegations cast a fresh dimension on the volatile political landscape of Manipur, with Jiribam MLA’s response fueling the controversy. As the matter unfolds, the state government and other stakeholders are carefully monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation of violence and ensure peace is maintained in the region.
