As the Pioneer of Indian Hospitality: The Inspiring Story of Mohan Singh Oberoi
Mohan Singh Oberoi, the respected founder of Oberoi Hotels and Resorts, is a household name in India. His remarkable journey, from a humble clerk to the pioneer of India’s hotel industry, is a testament to his unshakeable determination and business acumen. With a career spanning over seven decades, Oberoi has left an indelible mark on the hospitality sector, leaving behind a legacy that continues to flourish.
Born in Rawalpindi, Singh’s early education took him to Lahore, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree. After completing his education, he moved to Shimla in search of better prospects, but with no money in his pocket. He secured a job as a front desk clerk at the Cecil Hotel, earning a mere 50 rupees a month. However, his hard work, eagerness to learn, and sharp mind caught the attention of the British hotel manager, who saw immense potential in the young clerk.
Years later, when the hotel manager acquired a small hotel, he invited Oberoi to join him, and in 1934, Oberoi entered the hotel business, buying the Clark Hotel by mortgaging his wife’s jewelry and all his property. Four years later, he leased the Grand Hotel in Calcutta, a massive 500-room property. With his unwavering confidence and business acumen, he transformed the hotel into a lucrative venture. Oberoi’s next move was to invest in the shares of Associated Hotels of India (AHI), which owned properties in Shimla, Delhi, Lahore, Murree, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar. In 1943, he acquired a controlling interest in AHI, becoming the first Indian to manage the country’s largest hotel chain.
Under Oberoi’s leadership, the Group expanded globally, partnering with international hotel brands to attract international tourists. In 1965, he opened The Oberoi Intercontinental in New Delhi, and in 1973, he added to his success by building the 35-story Oberoi Sheraton in Mumbai. The group’s second hotel brand, Trident, was launched, with ten properties now operating across India, including cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Cochin, Agra, Jaipur, and Udaipur. Internationally, Trident has a presence in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, employing over 12,000 people worldwide.
Mohan Singh Oberoi’s remarkable journey came to an end in 2002, at the age of 103. Today, the Oberoi Group is a household name, with a market capitalization of around Rs 25,000 crore, with two listed companies, EIH Limited and EIH Associated Hotels Limited, firmly establishing him as a pioneer in the Indian hospitality industry. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs and hoteliers, serving as a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and vision.
