The stage is set for a fiercely contested election in the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC), with the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) confident of a strong showing. Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly and senior BJP leader Numal Momin has expressed optimism about the party’s prospects, citing overwhelming public support.
Momin believes that the NDA’s focus on maintaining peace in the region since 2016 will pay dividends at the polls. He promised that the party’s priority is to bring stability and development to the area, addressing the concerns of marginalized communities. In a candid interview, Momin also spoke about the Congress’s past failures, accusing the party of fostering communal conflicts among tribal communities by making erroneous decisions.
The Congress, however, has a different narrative, with opposition parties accusing the ruling alliance of ignoring local issues and sidelining the concerns of the marginalized. The Congress has claimed that the NDA’s performance has been lackluster, citing various wrongs committed during their tenure, including policy missteps and ineffective leadership.
The RHAC election will be conducted across 36 constituencies, with votes set to be counted on April 4. The Assam State Election Commission has reported that 445,586 eligible voters, comprising 216,181 men, 229,394 women, and 11 others, will cast their ballots at 630 polling stations. The deadline for filing nominations was March 15, and March 19 is the last day for withdrawal of candidature.
The RHAC was formed in 2016 to promote economic, educational, and socio-cultural development in the region while preserving the ethnic identity of the Rabha people. As the poll day nears, it remains to be seen whether the NDA can retain its grip on power or the Congress can mount a strong challenge to wrest control. One thing is certain, however – the people of the RHAC will have the final say on April 4, as they cast their ballots to shape the future of their region.
