Punjab Police Re-Captures 7 Key Aides of Notorious Amritpal Singh After Assam Jail Release
Punjab Police Re-Arrest Seven Aides of Radical Preacher Amritpal Singh on Way to Court
In a dramatic turn of events, the Punjab Police have re-arrested seven aides of radical preacher Amritpal Singh, who were released from the Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam on Wednesday. The arrests come after their National Security Act (NSA) remand expired, allowing them to be released. However, the Punjab Police had other plans, and a 25-member team, led by Superintendent of Police Harinder Singh Gill, was stationed in Dibrugarh to facilitate their transfer back to Punjab.
The initial release of Kulwant Singh, Harjeet Singh, and Gurinder Pal Singh on Wednesday was short-lived, as they were re-arrested and presented before a Dibrugarh court seeking transit remand for their transfer to Punjab. This move was part of a larger strategy to ensure the seven aides face trial for their alleged involvement in the 2023 Ajnala police station attack case. The case involves charges of spreading communal disharmony, attempted murder, attacking police personnel, and obstructing law enforcement duties.
The Punjab government had earlier opted not to renew the NSA against the seven released aides, instead opting to file fresh charges against them. According to officials, the legal process to transfer them to Punjab is now in its final phase, with the remaining three detainees, including Amritpal Singh, expected to be transferred by mid-2025. Papalpreet Singh and Varinder Singh Johal, who are also facing NSA detentions, have detention periods scheduled to expire in June 2025.
The re-arrests of the seven aides mark a significant development in the ongoing legal battle against the radical preacher and his associates. As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how the Punjab courts will treat the allegations against the accused, which have far-reaching implications for the state’s law enforcement and community harmony. With the Punjab Police now in possession of transit remand for the seven aides, the trial proceedings are set to begin, marking a new chapter in the complex and controversial saga of Amritpal Singh.
