Empowering Change: Northeast India’s first-ever Social Work Conclave kicks off in Assam
Northeast Social Work Conclave 2025: A Call to Action for a More Equitable Society
The Indian Awaz Foundation in collaboration with the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Government hosted the inaugural Northeast Social Work Conclave on March 18 at Gauhati University, coinciding with International Social Work Day. The event brought together hundreds of social work professionals, students, and policymakers to discuss critical issues like professional education in social work and the role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in sustainable development across the Northeast region.
In his keynote address, BTR Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro emphasized the essential role of social workers in nation-building, saying, “Social workers are the backbone of grassroots transformation. Their dedication creates the foundation for an equitable and self-reliant society.” He stressed that social work is not just a profession, but a vital component of building a stronger, more just society.
BTR Executive Member Wilson Hasda highlighted the persistent gap between policy formation and implementation at the community level, underscoring the need for stronger partnerships between government agencies and social sector organizations. He emphasized the need for cohesive efforts to bridge the gap and create positive change.
The conclave featured panel discussions on professional social work education, strategic CSR investments in Northeast India, and innovative approaches to community development. Nazim Ahmed, Founder of Indian Awaz Foundation, noted, “This conclave is a reflection of the power of collective action in bringing real impact.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration and cooperation in driving positive change.
The event saw a “Pledge Wall” activity where attendees were encouraged to commit to specific actions in their communities. In a poignant moment, Boro inscribed the message “Only love and peace can protect the world” on the wall, inspiring attendees to make a commitment to making a difference in their own communities.
The conclave served as a catalyst for social workers, policymakers, and community leaders to come together and explore ways to address pressing social issues in the region. As the world grapples with the challenges of the 21st century, this event demonstrated the power of collective action in driving positive change and promoting a more equitable society.
