Delightful Moments: New Zealand PM Luxon Enjoys ‘Gully Cricket’ Adventure in India [In Pics]

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s recent five-day official visit to India featured a mix of cultural engagement and diplomatic activity, underscoring the enduring ties between the two nations. During his visit beginning on March 16, Luxon shared moments of cultural exchange, such as playing ‘gully cricket’ with local children in New Delhi, accompanied by former New Zealand cricketer Ross Taylor. Luxon’s presence in India was marked by his role as the chief guest at the prestigious 10th edition of the Raisina Dialogue 2025, where he delivered a keynote address highlighting the historic and evolving relationship between Indians and New Zealanders.

Luxon’s keynote at the Raisina Dialogue emphasized the long-standing connections between the two countries, which date back over 200 years. He highlighted the significant contribution of the Indian diaspora, noting, “Kiwi-Indians today are fully integrated into our multicultural society.” Luxon pointed out that New Zealanders of Indian descent now make up 11% of Auckland’s population, reflecting the vibrant cultural tapestry of New Zealand’s largest city.

In New Delhi, Luxon also visited iconic sites such as India Gate and the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple. On social media platform X, Luxon shared his experience at the temple, acknowledging the valuable contributions of New Zealand’s Hindu community. “The Hindu community in New Zealand has made a large contribution to our country. Today in Delhi, I paid my respects at a place sacred to many Kiwi-Hindus,” he wrote, fostering cultural empathy and understanding.

Amidst cultural engagements, significant diplomatic conversations took place, particularly concerning trade. Luxon expressed optimism about finalizing a free trade agreement with India within 60 days, a strategic move anticipated to enhance bilateral trade significantly. This announcement came after both nations agreed to reinvigorate negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), initially proposed in 2010. Despite previous setbacks, the renewed dialogue signals a mutual desire to strengthen economic ties. The potential agreement could boost trade between the two countries tenfold over a decade. Currently, trade stands at $873.4 million for 2023-24, reflecting a decrease from the previous year.

However, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) cautions that the proposed free trade agreement may offer limited new benefits, noting New Zealand’s relatively low average import tariff of 2.3% compared to India’s 17.8%. As discussions resume, there is a focus on creating a balanced agreement that supports both sides.

Luxon’s visit to India highlights the dynamic relationship between India and New Zealand, driven by cultural connections and economic aspirations. By intertwining these elements into his itinerary, Luxon reinforced the enduring friendship and mutual benefits awaiting both nations as they navigate future partnerships. The visit stands as a testament to the potential of fostering deeper ties through dialogue and shared experiences.
