Empowering Nagaland’s Rural Communities: NECTAR’s Grassroots Initiative for Sustainable Livelihoods
The North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR) recently conducted a Farmers’ Mobilization and Awareness Program in Nihoto Village, Dimapur district, as part of its PM-DevINE project, the NECTAR Livelihood Improvement Project (Multi-State) – A Value Chain on Utilization of Banana Pseudo Stem for Value-Added Products. The initiative aims to promote sustainable rural entrepreneurship by converting banana pseudo-stem into marketable products such as banana fibre extraction, nonwoven fabric production, organic liquid nutrient preparation, and handmade paper manufacturing.
The program brought together representatives from eight villages, with experts from the Consortium for Training, Research, and Development (CTRD), Guwahati, and The Entrepreneurs’ Associate, Kohima, sharing their insights and knowledge. The State Agriculture Department’s SDAO Pughoboto, Kitoho Michael Swu, and progressive farmer Kitoho S. Rotokha also participated, providing valuable feedback and guidance to the farmers. The session focused on best agricultural practices and the importance of supporting the Common Facility Centre (CFC) at Kukidolong Village, Chumukedima.
The CFC, established by NECTAR, serves as a hub for promoting sustainable rural entrepreneurship. Farmers were trained on the process of converting banana pseudo-stem into various products, with the goal of creating a value chain that benefits the entire community. The program received widespread attention, with participants reporting increased awareness and confidence in their ability to adopt sustainable agricultural practices and engage in value-added productions.
The event was a significant step towards empowering rural communities, and NECTAR’s initiatives have far-reaching implications for the region. The organization’s efforts have the potential to promote sustainable development, create new economic opportunities, and improve living standards for rural populations. As the project continues to gain momentum, it will be interesting to see the impact it has on the lives of those involved.
In conclusion, the Farmers’ Mobilization and Awareness Program was a successful initiative that laid the groundwork for a sustainable future for the participants. With the support of organizations like NECTAR, the rural communities of the region can look forward to a brighter future, filled with opportunities for growth and development.
