A High-Profile Transfer is Imminent: Punjab Police Team Arrives in Assam to Facilitate Release of Radical Preacher’s Aides
A 25-member team of Punjab Police has been stationed in Dibrugarh, Assam, for the past two days, tasked with facilitating the transfer of seven aides of radical preacher Amritpal Singh, who have been imprisoned in Dibrugarh Central Jail for nearly two years. According to officials, the transfer date has not been publicly disclosed, but it could potentially take place within the next two to three days.
Amritpal Singh, an independent MP, and his associates were arrested in 2023 under the National Security Act (NSA) from various parts of Punjab following a crackdown on their outfit. Ten members of the group, including Amritpal’s uncle, were housed in the Dibrugarh Central Jail. The Punjab Police team, led by Superintendent of Police Harinder Singh Gill, has been engaged in completing legal formalities to facilitate the transfer.
The seven aides set for transfer include Daljit Singh Kalsi, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Harjit Singh, Bhagwant Singh alias Pradhan Mantri Bajeke, Basant Singh, and Gurinderpal Singh. Amritpal Singh, along with Papalpreet Singh and Varinder Singh Johal, will continue to be held under NSA, with their detention scheduled to expire in June 2025. The radical preacher, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate, won the Khadoor Sahib seat in Punjab.
