MI’s Back-to-Back Quest: Mumbai Indians Win WPL 2025, Savoring Victory once Again
Mumbai Indians (MI) emerged victorious in the WPL 2025, claiming their second title in three years by defeating Delhi Capitals by eight runs at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s top-score of 66 guided the hosts to 149/7, setting the stage for a strong performance by the bowlers.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr spearheaded the bowling attack, taking 3-30 and 2-25, respectively, to restrict Delhi to 141/9 in their 20 overs. The talismanic all-rounder Amanjot Kaur credited the team’s resilience, saying, “We have played big games before, so it didn’t feel like a very different occasion. Our team meetings are simple, and we knew we wouldn’t leave this game for anyone else to win.”
Kaur’s words echoed throughout the team, with newcomer Kamalini, who won the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup with India in February, thrilled to have contributed to the WPL title. “I learned a lot on the mental side (in the WPL), and it was my first six, so it was very exciting,” she said, beaming with pride. Sajeevan Sajana, the hard-hitting all-rounder, dedicated the title to the team’s support staff, led by head coach Charlotte Edwards, who he called “amazing.”
As the team celebrated their second WPL title, Jhulan Goswami, the bowling coach, praised the performances of Shabnim and Nat, who topped the run charts in the competition. “When the team needed it, Shabnim came and produced a performance like this. She is a fighter, she wants to lead from the front. That’s what we want as a group,” she said.
Jhulan echoed the sentiments of coach Charlotte Edwards, who was credited with helping the team prepare well for the season. “We could not make it (last season), but this season, we planned well, and so much hard work went in behind the scenes. We have to give this trophy to all those who worked behind us,” Amanjot Kaur added.
Nita Ambani, the team’s owner, showered praise on the side, highlighting their resilience and teamwork. “Sitting in the dugout, my heart was just beating… but I had full confidence in my girls. Unstoppable! They fought till the last ball. Nat has been outstanding all season, and those three wickets she took were fantastic,” she said, beaming with pride.
