Delhi Celebrates Unprecedented Triumph: Cleanest Air Quality in Three Years with Miraculous AQI of 85!
In a notable climate update for India’s capital, Delhi recently experienced its cleanest air quality in more than three years for any day between January 1 and March 15. On Saturday, March 15, 2025, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) reported that the city recorded a 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 85. This places it in the ‘Satisfactory’ category as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) standards, where an AQI ranging between 51 and 100 indicates satisfactory air quality. This development marks a significant improvement for Delhi, which has struggled with high pollution levels, and it’s the first time since 2020 that the city recorded a ‘Satisfactory’ AQI in March.
Simultaneously, Delhi is grappling with unusual weather patterns, as it registered its hottest day of the year on Friday, March 14, with temperatures soaring to 36.2 degrees Celsius. This peak was 7.3 degrees Celsius higher than the norm, as monitored by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On the following day, the maximum temperature slightly dropped to 33 degrees Celsius, which is still 4.1 degrees above the seasonal average, while the minimum temperature stood at 18.7 degrees Celsius. The humidity levels varied between 50% and 62%, pointing to fluctuating weather conditions in the region.
Delhi’s improvement in air quality is a positive contrast to the severe pollution levels typically experienced during this period. The CAQM highlighted this achievement on its social media platform, stating, “Today, Delhi recorded an average AQI of 85, the lowest in the last three years for the period from 1st January to 15th March.” This statement underlines the significance of cleaner air, as Delhi usually faces challenges due to vehicular emissions, construction dust, and industrial activities contributing to high air pollution levels.
Weather forecasts suggest a shift in conditions with the prediction of cloudy skies and the possibility of light rain or drizzle for Sunday, March 16. The IMD anticipates that the maximum and minimum temperatures might register around 32 degrees Celsius and 17 degrees Celsius, respectively. This potential rain could further aid in cleansing the air, providing temporary relief from pollution.
As Delhi continues to oscillate between extreme temperatures and variable air quality, it remains crucial for city planners and environmental authorities to strategize on long-term solutions to maintain and improve air quality. Initiatives promoting green technology and stricter pollution control measures are imperative.
This recent development adds a layer of optimism for residents who have been voicing concerns about air pollution’s impact on health and quality of life. Authorities and residents alike are hopeful that these trends, albeit temporary, can steer broader efforts toward sustainable urban living and improved environmental conditions.
Delhi’s achievements in air quality management, coupled with weather fluctuations, underscore the city’s dynamic environmental challenges. As residents navigate these conditions, continuous efforts and stringent policies will be pivotal in addressing long-standing atmospheric issues.
