Unleashing the Flavors of Nagaland: Khonoma’s Premier Garlic Festival
Nagaland’s First-Ever Garlic Festival Boosts Agricultural Development and Community Engagement
Khonoma Village, known for its rich agricultural heritage, is making significant strides in the field by hosting the state’s first-ever Garlic Festival. The event, organized by the Khonoma Women’s Union (KWU) in collaboration with the Women Resource Development under the MYKI Village Adoption Initiative, brought together farmers, agricultural experts, policymakers, and community leaders to explore ways to enhance garlic farming.
At the festival, held on March 14, State Rural Development Minister Metsübo Jamir emphasized the importance of rural development initiatives and the promotion of local agricultural products through the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM). The NSRLM is working in 1,260 villages, aiming to create effective platforms for rural poor to increase household income through sustainable livelihoods and better access to financial services. Jamir highlighted the significance of processing and preservation in ensuring farmers receive fair value for their produce and commended Khonoma for maintaining traditional and sustainable agricultural practices.
Jamir also encouraged the youth to shift their focus from government jobs to skill-based sustainability, underscoring the need for skill development training to enhance self-reliance and economic growth. He announced plans to set up a garlic processing unit in Khonoma to support market linkages and assured the village would receive a mobile vehicle from the RD department to facilitate agricultural product transportation.
Women Resource Development Commissioner and Secretary Zhothisa Dawhuo shared that the garlic festival serves as a testament to the remarkable progress made under the MYKI Village Adoption Initiative, a program aimed at driving economic empowerment, promoting self-reliance, and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices. Khonoma, reputed for its resilience, cultural heritage, and environmental conservation efforts, has been chosen as the pilot location for the "One Village, One Product" initiative, aligning with the broader ODOP policy to foster economic growth and self-sufficiency.
As part of this initiative, 30 dedicated women farmers received seed money of Rs. 30,000 to undertake extensive garlic cultivation, enabling them to take on larger-scale productions and enhance market competitiveness. Women have always played a crucial role in agricultural development, and this initiative is a resounding affirmation of their invaluable contribution to rural economies.
Nagaland’s Horticulture Director Dr. Meyasahi and Joint Director of Agriculture Medovilie Ladu also spoke on the occasion, assuring assistance to farmers in taking the festival forward. The event received an overwhelmingly positive response from many visitors.
In her keynote address, Sieno Sakhrie, President of KWU, noted that the garlic festival aims to celebrate the vegetable’s flavor, health benefits, and the unseen efforts of farmers, with Khonoma being the largest cash crop supplier in Nagaland. The event has cemented its place as more than just a celebration of agricultural success but a tribute to "diligence, collaboration, and a vision for a prosperous future."
