Mizoram on Cusp of a New Era: Lengpui Airport Set to Join Hands with AAI
The Mizoram State Government May Hand Over Its Lone Airport to Airports Authority of India
The Mizoram government may be on the verge of handing over its only airport, located in Lengpui near Aizawl, to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), according to an official announcement made on Friday. This move follows a discussions held between Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday. The state government may hold further talks with Shah and the Civil Aviation Ministry to finalize the agreement.
The chief minister informed the state assembly on Thursday that Shah had proposed the transfer of Lengpui airport to the AAI. The Mizoram government, along with opposition parties and non-governmental organizations, has endorsed this move. In the past, CM Lalduhoma had stated that the state government was drafting a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to hand over the airport to the Indian Air Force (IAF). However, this proposal has received opposition from organizations such as the Mizo National Front (MNF), the Congress, and others.
Details of the discussions held between CM Lalduhoma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are not yet publicly disclosed, but the Chief Minister has confirmed that the transfer of the airport to the AAI has been supported by the state government. The AAI, being an established and experienced organization in airport management, may be expected to improve the existing infrastructure and services at the Lengpui airport.
As the discussion process continues, it remains to be seen if the opposition parties and organizations opposed to the proposal will have a change of heart. If the move goes ahead, it may lead to enhanced security, safety, and operational standards at the airport, as well as better connections for the people of Mizoram.
