Missing from the Prime Minister’s Itinerary: The Unspoken Truth Behind Manipur’s Absence
Ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s three-day visit to Assam and Mizoram, the Congress has raised questions over the absence of Manipur from his itinerary. According to sources, Shah will arrive in Jorhat, Assam, late on March 14 for a three-day visit to both states.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh questioned the decision, saying, “Assam’s Chief Minister has just announced the Union Home Minister’s visit to Assam and Mizoram, starting March 14. But why is Manipur not on his itinerary?” Ramesh’s statement comes as the party continues to criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur, with hundreds of people having lost their lives in ethnic violence since May 2023. The violence has seen over 220 deaths and thousands rendered homeless as tensions rise between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the adjoining hills-based Kuki-Zo groups.
In response, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Shah will travel to Dergaon in Golaghat district, where he will spend the night at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy. This move has drawn criticism from the Congress, with senior leaders accusing the Centre of ignoring the crisis in Manipur. The Congress has also been targeting Modi over his recent trip to Mauritius, labelling it “frequent-flyer time” while people in Manipur await his visit.
The situation in Manipur remains dire, with an ongoing cycle of violence and displacement that has left many in a state of uncertainty. The Centre’s handling of the crisis has come under fire, with the Congress urging swift action to restore peace and stability to the region. As Home Minister Shah prepares to visit Assam and Mizoram, the Congress and the people of Manipur will be watching with bated breath, hoping that his visit will bring about a change in the Centre’s approach to the crisis and lead to a more comprehensive solution.
