Delhi Government School Scandal: President Approves FIR Against Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain
President Droupadi Murmu has given her approval for the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against former Delhi ministers Manish Sisadia and Satyendar Jain in connection with an alleged scam of ₹1,300 crore related to the construction of classrooms in Delhi government schools. The development comes after the Delhi government’s vigilance directorate recommended a probe into the matter and submitted a report to the chief secretary in 2022.
According to sources, the FIR will be registered against Sisodia and Jain for their alleged involvement in the scam during their tenure as ministers in the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government. The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) had highlighted “glaring irregularities” in the construction of over 2,400 classrooms in Delhi government schools by the Public Works Department (PWD) in a report dated February 17, 2020.
The alleged scam came to light after an investigation by the vigilance directorate, which was ordered to probe the matter following a complaint lodged by a whistleblower. The investigation reportedly revealed several instances of irregularities, including the use of substandard materials, unsatisfactory construction work, and gross technical deviations from the approved designs.
The CVC’s report had also pointed out that the Delhi government had allegedly spent a significant amount on the construction of these classrooms, which were supposedly of poor quality, and failed to ensure the safety and well-being of the students. The alleged irregularities in the construction of the classrooms raise concerns over the accountability of the government officials and the Delhi administration, leading to a massive financial scam of this magnitude.
The investigation into the scam is a major blow to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its leaders, who have been facing criticism over allegations of corruption and mismanagement of government funds. The FIR registration is a significant step towards bringing the accused to justice and holding them accountable for the alleged misdeeds. The situation is being closely monitored by the opposition, which is demanding a thorough probe into the scam and the suspension of the accused leaders.
