Revolutionizing Assam’s Housing Dreams: 3.80 Lakh Affordable Homes Unveiled under PMAY
Assam to Get 3.80 Lakh New Houses Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
The Government of Assam has recently received a significant boost in its efforts to provide affordable housing to its citizens. Announcing the news, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the state will be allocated 3.80 lakh new houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). The welcome development comes with the first installment for the construction of these houses being disbursed on March 19.
This is not the first time the scheme has brought relief to Assam’s residents. So far, it has already benefited 22 lakh families across the state, making it a vital stepping stone in the government’s mission to provide safe and secure living spaces. However, there are still many eligible families yet to be covered, prompting the state government to request the Central Government to conduct an additional round of geo-tagging to identify those left out of the scheme.
In an innovative move, the state has decided to collaborate with ‘Jeevika Sakhis’, a social enterprise, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to carry out the geo-tagging exercise. This new system will see ‘Jeevika Sakhis’ from nearby villages engage in localized data collection, ensuring that the process is carried out smoothly. Moreover, families will have the option to self-geo-tag their own houses, providing an additional layer of transparency.
The Panchayat & Rural Development Department will be responsible for verifying the geo-tagged data, following which approvals will be sought from the Gram Sabha and the Block-Level Committee, before the list is reviewed and finalized by a district-level committee led by the Guardian Minister and submitted to the Government of India. This careful planning is designed to ensure that a precise and accurate list of eligible households is produced.
At a recent press briefing, Panchayat & Rural Development Department Principal Secretary Jan Ekka shed more light on the ‘Awas Portal’ and ‘Awas Plus’ initiatives, aimed at streamlining housing data. The geo-tagging exercise is set to take place from March 17 to March 31, accompanied by public awareness campaigns through advertisements.
The upcoming housing initiatives are expected to make a significant impact on the lives of Assam’s residents, providing them with a sense of security and stability. As the state works towards meeting its goal, it is crucial that the geo-tagging exercise is carried out efficiently to ensure that all eligible households benefit from this scheme.
