Bangladesh Army’s Strife: Has Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman’s Leadership Unified the Torn Ranks?
Rumors of Coup Attempt in Bangladesh Spark International Controversy
A recent arrival at Dhaka’s Shah Jalal International Airport has sparked a heated debate in the international media, with reports suggesting that a coup plot against the Bangladesh Army’s General Waker-uz-Zaman was foiled. The general, who was visiting the Central African Republic, returned to Bangladesh on March 6 and was met with an unusual amount of scrutiny from Indian media outlets.
The controversy began with a report from an online media platform, which stated that General Waker-uz-Zaman’s arrival was delayed by an hour-long stopover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This delay, according to the report, allowed him to receive intelligence on a potential coup plot and take action to prevent it.
General Waker-uz-Zaman, who has a reputation for being a neutral and balanced leader, was awarded a presidential medal by the Central African Republic’s President Faustin-Archange Touadéra for Bangladesh’s significant contributions to the country’s development, particularly in the healthcare sector. Five units of the Bangladesh Army are currently serving under the United Nations as a peacekeeping force in the conflict-ridden country.
However, Indian media outlets, including television channels, newspapers, and online platforms, have taken the story a step further, drawing conclusions that General Waker-uz-Zaman played a key role in foiling a potential coup plot. According to these reports, a group of senior Bangladesh Army officers were allegedly planning to replace General Waker-uz-Zaman.
Lieutenant Colonel Sami ud Dowla Chowdhury, the main spokesperson for the Inter-Services Public Relations wing, has denied these allegations, stating that the army’s chain of command was functioning normally and that there was no truth to the rumors. He also pointed out that General Waker-uz-Zaman was scheduled to return on March 6 and not March 7.
The Indian media’s aggressive reporting has sparked concerns about disinformation and attempts to undermine the stability and reputation of the Bangladesh Army. The usually reclusive General Waker-uz-Zaman has been at the center of attention lately, with some suggesting that he might take action to address the deteriorating law and order situation in the country. His role in foiling the supposed coup plot has further solidified his reputation as a key player in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the rumors will lead to any concrete action against General Waker-uz-Zaman or Lt. Gen. Faizur Rahman, who has been accused of having ties to the Pakistani establishment. For now, the controversy has raised more questions than answers, leaving the people of Bangladesh wondering if the rumors are just a smokescreen for a larger power struggle to come.
