Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has fired back at the Congress party for questioning the state government’s plan to launch its own satellite, labelling their criticism as uninformed and based on ignorance of the technology involved.
Sarma, in a press conference, dismissed the criticism, saying that the plan was well within the state’s right to request one from the central government, given India’s already significant presence in space, with over 300 operational satellites. He emphasized that a TV channel can have its own satellite, so why not a state government?
Sarma also highlighted his administration’s advanced talks with ISRO, the Indian Space Research Organisation, which has been working on its ambitious Gaganyaan project. He expressed confidence that his government’s plan for a satellite would not be derailed by negative comments from opponents.
Reacting to Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah’s characterization of the satellite project as a political gimmick, Sarma termed it as a sign of ignorance about the technology involved. “If they (Congress) fail to grasp this simple concept, I wonder how they dream of running the state,” he said.
The chief minister also shared his plans to visit Barpeta and Batadrava during the upcoming Doul Utsav festival, extending his best wishes to the people of Assam and emphasizing the cultural significance of the festival. He also confirmed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah would be visiting Assam soon to inaugurate the new building of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy and attend other key events.
Despite facing political attacks, Sarma remains committed to his vision of technological progress for Assam, asserting that innovation would not be deterred by uninformed criticism.
