Assam Government Commits to Implementing Clause 6 of Assam Accord with Ambitious Cultural and Educational Plans
The Assam government has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord by integrating substantial provisions into the Assam Budget 2025. A significant chunk of the allocated funds will be dedicated to preserving Assam’s rich cultural heritage and promoting higher education in media and film studies.
A one-time grant of Rs 100 crore has been allocated to Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, a prominent cultural institution, to facilitate advanced research, modern preservation techniques, and enhance documentation efforts. This substantial investment will enable the institution to further its mission of preserving and promoting Assam’s cultural legacy. As the government looks to bolster academic standards in media and film studies, the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute is set to be upgraded to a degree-level institution, building on its current diploma-level status.
The government has also announced plans to construct multipurpose cultural complexes in all 35 district headquarters to commemorate Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaruah, a stalwart of Assam’s literary world. These state-of-the-art facilities will serve as dedicated auditoriums, showcasing his life and contributions. A total of Rs 1,700 crore has been earmarked for this ambitious project, with Rs 1,240 crore allocated for the first 12 districts and the remaining amount to be distributed among the remaining 23 districts.
In addition, the government has launched the Multipurpose Cultural Complexes for Indigenous People initiative, aiming to provide dedicated spaces for tribal and ethnic communities. The project involves constructing 20 such facilities across the state at a cost of Rs 1,500 crore, with each complex receiving a grant of Rs 75 crore. This bold initiative is expected to promote cultural exchange and understanding among different communities, fostering a sense of unity and belonging among Assam’s diverse population.
As the state government continues to drive progress and development, these ambitious initiatives demonstrate its unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting Assam’s rich cultural heritage and education. The Assam Budget 2025 promises to be a significant step towards realizing this vision, and it remains to be seen how these projects will shape the state’s future.
