Ukraine on Brink of Ceasefire, Now It’s Russia’s Turn to Act
After meeting with Ukrainian officials in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Ukraine has agreed to an immediate and interim ceasefire for 30 days, pending Russian reciprocation. The US has also lifted its pause on sharing intelligence and providing military assistance to Ukraine.
According to Rubio, Ukraine is ready to stop fighting and start negotiating, leaving it up to Russia to respond positively. “I hope they’re going to say yes, and if they do, then I think we’ve made great progress. If they say no, then we will, unfortunately, know what the impediment is to peace here,” Rubio said. He emphasized that the US President wants the fighting to stop, and believes that negotiating an end to the war is the only way to achieve this.
The joint statement by the US and Ukraine confirms that Ukraine has expressed readiness to accept the US proposal for an immediate 30-day ceasefire, which can be extended by mutual agreement and is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by Russia. The statement further notes that the US will resume security assistance to Ukraine and lift the pause on intelligence sharing. It also highlights the importance of Russian reciprocation in achieving peace, with Rubio stating, “Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace.”
The development comes as Ukraine and Russia continue to engage in an ongoing conflict, with fighting causing widespread death and destruction. The US has been working to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict, and it appears that Ukraine’s agreement to the ceasefire proposal is a significant step forward. However, success is ultimately dependent on Russia’s response, which will be closely watched.
As the international community continues to monitor the situation, the world awaits a response from Russia, with the US Secretary of State reiterating that “the President has been abundantly clear: he wants the shooting to stop. He wants the warfare to stop. He wants the dying and the suffering to stop, and he believes, and rightfully so, that the only way to end this war is to negotiate an end to it.” With the stage set, it remains to be seen if Russia will choose to reciprocate Ukraine’s offer and take a crucial step towards ending the conflict.
