Parliament Clears Historic $6.6 Billion Budget for Manipur, Elevating Developmental Hopes
The Indian parliament has approved a significant boost to the nation’s finances, with the Lok Sabha passing a supplementary demands for grants that would incur an additional Rs 51,463 crore spending in the current fiscal year. This figure is part of a larger supplementary budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, which will see the government spending a whopping Rs 6.78 lakh crore. This would be topped up by savings and receipts of Rs 6.27 lakh crore, resulting in a net additional spending of Rs 51,462.86 crore.
According to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the government’s increased spending is largely geared towards redeeming high-cost debt, with a technical supplementary of Rs 5.54 lakh crore. This move is expected to reduce the government’s borrowing rates, as Minister Sitharaman revealed in a debate on the supplementary demands for grants. “Essentially, we are removing the high-cost debt from our shoulders by advanced redemptions in those debts,” she explained.
The government’s efforts to support the economic recovery of Manipur, a state under President’s Rule, also received significant attention. A vote on account for the state’s 2025-26 budget has been approved, allocating Rs 17,947 crore for six months. This amount will be used to support the state’s economic revival, with a separate corpus of Rs 500 crore set aside for a contingency fund. According to the Finance Minister, “We are providing all the financial assistance to support faster recovery of the economy of Manipur, similar to how we have helped Jammu and Kashmir.”
Manipur’s 2025-26 budget is projected to have total receipts of Rs 35,368 crore and an expenditure of Rs 35,104 crore, with Rs 2,634 crore generated from state taxes and Rs 400 crore from non-tax sources. The government is optimistic that their interventions will bear fruit, with the Finance Minister assuring that the Centre will provide full support to the state to achieve a swift economic turnaround. With the government’s commitment to stabilizing its debt and boosting the economy, this supplementary demand for grants is likely to have a significant impact on the country’s financial landscape.
