Assam’s CAA Awaits Justice: Only 2 Out of 39 Applicants Granted Citizenship, A Glimmer of Hope for Thousands
Assam Reports 39 Applications Under CAA, Two Granted Indian Citizenship
The Assam Assembly was updated on Monday by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on the status of applications under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). According to Patowary, a total of 39 people living in Assam have submitted applications under the CAA, with two already granted Indian citizenship. Eighteen applications are currently under consideration, and 19 have been deemed closed, although applicants have the option to reapply.
The minister attributed the strict security measures taken by the security forces deployed at the international border as the reason for the successful foiling of infiltration bids from Bangladesh. However, he acknowledged that challenges persist, particularly in certain areas, and the government is exploring the use of scientific means to fully seal these borders.
Patowary’s response came in response to a question by MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, who sought clarity on the government’s stance on infiltration attempts and border security. The minister assured that no official or agency was involved in any manner with these attempts. He also provided an update on the number of Bangladeshis detained for trying to enter Assam illegally, with 156 captured between 2021 and 2024.
The minister revealed that the BSF guards the border, with the Assam Police acting as the second line of defense. He highlighted that barbed wire fencing is in place, but acknowledged that challenges persist in areas like the river border in Sribhumi district, where the government is exploring innovative solutions.
The discussions on the floor also touched on the issue of Aadhar enrollment in the state, with Patowary announcing that the saturation rate had reached 96.97% as of January this year. He assured that all districts have facilities for Aadhar enrollment, which is an ongoing process.
The debate on border security and CAA applications underscores the complexities of managing the state’s borders and the ongoing efforts to ensure its security and development. As the government works to address the challenges, it will be crucial to balance the need for effective border management with the rights and concerns of the people affected.
