Unraveling the Scandal: What’s Behind Guwahati Press Club’s Unsettling Controversy
A Fresh Firestorm Surrounding a Guwahati Press Club Social Media Post Raises Questions on Media Body’s Conduct
A recent social media post by a television journalist affiliated with the Guwahati Press Club (GPC) has sparked a heated controversy, prompting serious concerns about the media body’s conduct. At the heart of the issue is a visit by Assam State Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal, who allegedly made derogatory comments about the traditional performing art form, Bhaona.
According to the journalist, Singhal disrespected a GPC delegation and questioned the necessity of a press club organizing a Bhaona performance. The minister reportedly claimed the art form is not secular in nature. The GPC delegation had invited Singhal to a forthcoming Bhaona performance, and the interaction reportedly took place at his residence in the evening.
The incident has drawn widespread criticism, with many demanding an apology from the minister. Opposition leaders and various media outlets have also weighed in, with some accusing Singhal of lacking understanding of the traditional performing art form. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, however, has expressed doubt about the allegations, stating that Singhal would not make such immature comments.
The minister himself has issued a formal clarification, denying any derogatory remarks about Bhaona. In a subsequent social media post, Singhal claimed the story was “false and fabricated” and apologized for any unnecessary debate, reiterating that he never made any derogatory comments about Bhaona. The GPC has seemingly accepted the minister’s apology, although the matter has not entirely subsided.
The controversy has also raised questions about the GPC’s role in inviting Singhal, given he is not responsible for the Information and Public Relations or Cultural Ministry. Social media users have also questioned why the delegation visited the minister at his residence, rather than the Secretariat, and if there were any underlying motives for the meeting. Some have speculated about a potential request for a substantial donation that did not materialize.
Furthermore, many are calling for the GPC to apologize for the confusion and for not supporting an event already backed by the Northeast Zone Cultural Centre under the Union Ministry of Culture, New Delhi. The media club’s current status operating illegally from the Ambari archaeological site has also drawn attention, with concerns about the preservation of the site and the potential relocation of the press club.
This developing story highlights the need for transparency and accountability in media bodies, ensuring the public is kept informed and engaged. As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the GPC and the minister will address the issue and whether the media body will take steps to address concerns about its conduct.
